December edition of the UN & You from Jimmy Walters

Hello All,

I hope you are doing well this Advent season! I am sharing with you the December edition of the UN & You newsletter from the Sisters of Charity Federation UN NGO Representative Jimmy Walters.

In this newsletter, Jimmy shares some reflections on the November UN Climate Conference in Brazil (COP 30). There was excitement in anticipation of this conference, with the hope that countries would come together with greater commitment to real action to address the climate emergency. Sadly, as Jimmy shares, there was little progress in the negotiations, with oil-producing countries blocking important steps forward, as well as any mention of fossil fuels in the final report. There was, however, a strong showing from civil society, particularly Indigenous communities from the region and around the world. They made it clear that regardless of the decisions inside the conference, they would not allow the planet and their lives to be sacrificed for corporate wealth.

In addition, the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty campaign received a boost with the Netherlands and Colombia offering to host an April summit to move forward on a green transition.

As Jimmy shares, there are stories of hope that continue to show light in spite of the slow movement of governments and corporations. He also offers a link to some wonderful Advent reflections for social justice to encourage and sustain us.

I hope you find this newsletter engaging and hopeful! We continue to pray for Jimmy in his health struggles, and to pray for all those working for justice and peace.

Thank you for your prayers and support as we engage together as global citizens!

Peace to you,
Darlene
