February edition of the UN & You from Jimmy Walters
I am sharing with you the February edition of The UN & You from Sisters of Charity Federation UN NGO Representative Jimmy Walters.
In the newsletter, Jimmy shares a reflection on “what would Jesus do?” as we experience this difficult time in our world, and further, “where would Jesus be?” In his reflection, Jimmy recognizes that Jesus’ life and ministry show that he would be among those most vulnerable. He would also be with the advocates – those calling for the respect for human dignity, human rights, peace, and the integrity of our planet and all life. Those advocates include civil society representatives that engage at the UN, sharing the lived realities of those facing these challenges most deeply, and holding governments to account. As he shares, “It is good for us to be here.”
Jimmy offers an update on the 64th Commission for Social Development, which took place at the UN Headquarters in New York in February. This is an important event that we usually attend, though this year we were helping to host the UN Assistant Secretary General for Peacebuilding Support, Elizabeth Spehar. We did sign the Civil Society Declaration that was shared with the Commission organizers, sharing our priorities and calls for action.
He shares about the coming Commission on the Status of Women, in March, as well as the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels, in April. This came out of the November Climate Conference in Brazil (COP30).
I hope you enjoy and find inspiration in this edition of the UN & You!
Your continued prayers and support are essential, as we engage as global citizens in this important work.
Peace,
Darlene
