Thu, Feb 15th, 2024

Sister Mary Dolores Sogz, 90, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Mary’s Court, Parkland, Antigonish, on Saturday February 10, 2024, in the 71st year of her Religious Life.

Born in Odessa, Saskatchewan, Sister Mary Dolores was the daughter of Joseph H. and Barbara (Unser) Sogz. (Stepmother Joanna Sogz).

Sister Mary Dolores entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on August 15, 1951. She pronounced her first vows on August 15, 1953, and her perpetual vows on August 15, 1956.  She obtained a BSc in Home Economics in 1956, and further training as a dietitian. Sr. Dolores served in several of the Congregation’s hospitals; St. Joseph’s, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia; St. Rita’s, Sydney, Nova Scotia; St. Peter’s, Melville, Saskatchewan; St. Michael’s, Lethbridge, Alberta. She was ever the Home Economist, always finding ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle.  Anyone who was on the receiving end of a greeting card from Sr. Dolores was a beneficiary of her creativity.

Following retirement from this work, Sr. Dolores moved into Pastoral Care, working at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish for a time, and while living in Inverness was fully engaged in the ministry of presence. She served the Congregation in several capacities when she moved to Bethany, and following the move to Parkland, Antigonish, continued to live a life dedicated to Gospel Hospitality to anyone and everyone she encountered, always ready with a story and a smile.

Sister Mary Dolores was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters Rose Ziegler, and Cathy Callfas (Stepmother Joanna Sogz and Stepbrother Wilfred Huber).  She leaves her devoted niece and her husband and several other nieces and nephews.
